Adding Romanian dictionary

Lucian Adrian Grijincu-3
Hi,

I'm hoping I found the proper list to post this, if not, please direct
me to that one.

I'd like to know if it is possible to add a new dictionary.

I checked out the latest dictionaries:
  export CVSROOT=":pserver:[hidden email]:/cvs"
  cvs login
  cvs co dictionaries

And saw many (33) dictionaries, but no Romanian one. I see that these
require three kinds of functionalities: a dictionary, a hyphenator and
a thesaurus. There is support for all of these in a separate Romanian
extension, but I see no reason why they shouldn't be included with the
rest.

The only reason that I know that prevents us from adding dictionaries to
the code-line (and that way to the vanilla product) is license issues.
If the dictionary provider did not add a matching open-source license we
simply can not include them.

This was one reason for introducing dictionary extensions. They can be
uploaded to the extension repository with whatever license they have.
That way all users can download them but the dictionaries license does
not affect the OOo distribution. since it is not included by default.

Thus if anyone wants us to include dictionaries by default it should by
the provider of that dictionary since only that person can legally add a
matching open-source license.

Thomas

If the licence of the romanian extension allows it we can integrate it
into the source code repository and bundle it with a romanian version or
language pack (or any other localization that might consider it useful
to bundle romanian linguistic tools). Where can I find the extension you
are talking about?

Mathias

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/dictionaries-ro
They are trilicensed under LGPL/GPL/MPL (MPL was needed so that the
dictionary can be used in Firefox & other Mozilla products).

The code is on sourceforge here:
  http://rospell.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/rospell/dictionar/trunk/

Under which license should the dictionary be licensed for it to be
included in the OpenOffice.org repo?

Re: Adding Romanian dictionary

Joan Montané
Hi all,

Just one related question,

What licenses are allowed to integrate extensions into the source code
or, in my case, Catalan version or Catalan language pack?

I looked arround the dictionaries in CVS and found dictionaries under
these licenses:
MPL/GPL/LGPL - da_DK, fr_FR
LGPL - af_ZA, en_GB, en_US, en_ZA, es_ES, et_ET, hu_HU
GPL - de_AT, de_CH, de_DE, gl

As I said, the Romanian dictionary is tri-licensed under GPL 2.0/LGPL
2.1/MPL 1.1.

In this case I can see no barrier to having it in the official oo repos.

Can you tell me what I need to do/provide you with so that the
dictionary gets included?

Hi Joan,

AFAIK we don't have any problems with (L)GPL and all permissive
licences, I'm unsure about MPL. I will ask and report back.

Mathias

Indeed.

The URL you already gave me and an issue in Issuezilla (that you can
assign to me - mba) is enough.

Mathias

Done as requested: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=101887

1. I'd like to know what is the protocol for submitting enhancements
for these dictionaries: when a new version is released I file a new
issue in Issuezilla, or write an email to this list?

2. I'd like to see this appear in Ubuntu Karmic, and Ubuntu uses
go-oo, should I contact go-oo too to ask them to pull the changes from
you when they are done? Is there some protocol you use to communicate
with the Go-OO team?

3. Can you please announce me when the dictionary is added so that I
can contact the Debian maintainers to see what needs to be done to
take the changes into Debian as soon as possible?

Thank you very much, and if you need anything (including testing or
whatnot) please contact me.

An issue works best.

Usually go-oo.org gets everything that our "upstream" version contains,
except if they don't want to take it. So I don't expect that you need to
do anything. If you want to make sure that your dictionary will make its
way into the go-oo.org version you can send a mail to
[hidden email] and ask.

Sure.

Thanks, testing would be fine.

GPL is not enough permissive. The French dictionary was under GPL for years and could not be included by default in OOo which required at least a LGPL licence or a more permissive one.

Some time ago our Legal Department has informed us that GPL is fine for
us also as we see the dictionaries as an independent product that we
don't modify. We never change dictionaries, we always use them as they
are.
