There already is a version of OpenOffice in Hindi:
https://www.openoffice.org/hi/download/index.html

The translation to Hindi is currently at 100%:
https://translate.apache.org/hi/aoo40/

But translation can always be improved (and extended for AOO 4.2.0).

What we are looking for on the homepage is someone to help us translate
the page itself.

So it depends on what you are looking for... ;-)

Kind regards, Matthias

दिनेश, OpenOffice का हिन्दी अनुवाद कुछ वर्षों पूर्व मैंने ही किया था। अगर उसमे कुछ बदलाव की आवश्यकता हो तो आप वहीं सुझाव दें।अनुवाद के लिए आपको सबसे पहले एक अकाउंट बनाना होगा। कुछ इस तरह का ईमेल भेजिये: Please create a Pootle account for me. I state that my contributions are
 under the Apache 2 license and I will work on Hindi. My preferred username is  xxxxxxx उसके बाद आपको बताया जाएगा की कैसे आगे बढ़ना है।

Great!

First of all (if not already done), you should subscribe to this mailing-list, otherwise you might miss some information. See:
https://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html#localization-mailing-list-public

Further informations about our localization process can be found here:
https://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html

For the start, I will send you some translatable strings, e.g.:

EN: search
HI:

EN: language
HI:

EN: The Free and Open Productivity Suite
HI:

EN: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.5 released!
HI:

EN: The Apache OpenOffice Project Announces Apache OpenOffice 4.1.5
HI:

Just reply to this mail and translate the strings inline. This way Hindi characters should be preserved and others will be able to contribute to the translation process. I will then update the webpage accordingly.

Note that Apache OpenOffice, OpenOffice, OpenOffice.org and other terms like these are trademarks and must not be translated!

Kind regards, Matthias

I look forward to hearing from you.

it's a good start to take the webpages of the "xx" area. These are
working as template for new languages or when they need an improvement.

Of course it's also possible to work on a part of it and the remaining
part later.

ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

Ahmad Alawsie

Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am mailing you all to raise awareness to an issue that I have encountered whilst translating strings on the Apache Translate Pootle Service. So whilst I’m translating, I decided to fiddle around with the website a little and came across an issue that occurs not only in the Arabic translation section, but for all other languages such as French, German, Italian and so on. Take a look at the picture below and be aware of where my cursor is pointing at...

So I am attempting to click the “Google translate (EN->AR) button”, and I expect it to either open a new window directing me to the google translate page, or maybe a mini-window on the current webpage I’m on, or at the very least, automatically translate the English string to Arabic based on Google translation. None of that happens, though, and instead I receive an error message at the bottom of the webpage saying “Google Translate Error. The request is missing a valid API key”.

I hope this makes sense to you all and am looking to hearing back from the relevant individual/s on a solution to this issue, as the existence of that button is there to work, and not be out of order. I would also like to express my interest in potentially helping you out with fixing this and other related problems as I am a sufficiently experienced coder too and not only a translator 😊

Thanks again everyone and I wish you all the best.

Regards,

Ahmad

RE: ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

Ahmad Alawsie

Hi all,

My apologies for the error in the email where the pictures I have inserted into the mail do not display. So I have now attached a word document file where the pictures are there to see, please take some time to see this error as this needs to be raised as an issue for the relevant team/individuals to work on and fix. In my opinion, this feature may prove to be vital to the translation progress of not only Arabic, but all languages, because I feel it will make everyone’s translation work more time-efficient and easier rather than using two window tabs to navigate between the Apache Translation Pootle Service webpage, and Google Translate webpage. Please (relevant individuals) do get back to me to discuss ideas on how this case can be moved forward.

Thanks again everyone.

Kind regards,

Ahmad A

SUGGESTION FOR THE TRANSLATION SERVICE

Ahmad Alawsie
In reply to this post by Ahmad Alawsie
Hi all,

I want to email everyone here to discuss an idea that I have for the Apache translate Pootle service website. Firstly, for those of you who have translated to any language of your preference using this service, you may or may not know what I am about to say.

Basically, when there is a suggestion on a word that is untranslated, or is translated and perhaps “needs work”, if I accept or reject the last suggestion, the webpage will automatically skip to the next word, even if the current word has not been translated. This is quite annoying, as I do not want it to skip to the next word, and then I have to navigate back to the word I was on, in order to finish, either fixing up an error/s, or translating the word since it is incomplete. Please, if the relevant individual/s can get back to me, so I can discuss with you in further details  (if required), on how the system should respond in the case of a user accepting/rejecting suggestions once there is no more suggestions left for the current word.

Thanks again everyone.

Kind regards,

Ahmad A

Thanks for flagging this. The Google translate option came with a Pootle
update but was never configured. We do not recommend using Google
Translate since quality is better if you don't use it (and, if your aim
is consistency, Pootle will give suggestions by itself). Do you think it
would be really useful? At the moment is is an unused new feature that
you are seeing just because of a system update. But if you feel it would
be important we can look into it.

Our website is a standard installation of Pootle. Pootle is free and
open-source, but it is not managed by the Apache Software Foundation.
This means that for Pootle bugs (or enhancements like this one) you will
have to go to the Pootle website and open issues there. From time to
time we will update our installation of Pootle and thus get the new
features/bugfixes.

Of course, it is still useful and good if, after posting to the Pootle
website, you send a link here so that we can follow the issue.

Regards,
   Andrea.

RE: ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

Ahmad Alawsie
In reply to this post by Andrea Pescetti-2
Hi Andrea and all,

I must disagree to some extent with not recommending Google translate. Firstly, I wish to state that I do not use Google Translate for entire translations, since it translates word to word, and not based on the context of the actual phrase. However, I do believe it is useful in the sense that it gives a word and other alternatives for the translated words, and as an Arabic translator on this service, I have no issue with Google translate and would actually like this shortcut button to function. This is for the same reasons I had stated in the previous email in regards to this issue: time-efficient and is useful for word-to-word translations, which will then allow the translator to translate further, based on the context of the phrase that needs to be translated.

I hope you can understand what I am saying, and am looking forward to seeing that button actually functioning, in order to boost efficiency of translation for a translator (contributor) like myself. Thanks again and will look forward to hearing back from you.

Kind regards,

Ahmad A

RE: SUGGESTION FOR THE TRANSLATION SERVICE

Ahmad Alawsie
In reply to this post by Andrea Pescetti-2
Hi Andrea and all,

I know I am emailing quite a lot and hope it is not an issue to you and everyone else on this mailing list. I understand now about the suggestion I offered, but how do I actually suggest on the Pootle website? Can you offer me some guidance to this, and provide me a link too, to make it a little easier to understand this process. Thanks again, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Ahmad A

Our website is a standard installation of Pootle. Pootle is free and
open-source, but it is not managed by the Apache Software Foundation.
This means that for Pootle bugs (or enhancements like this one) you will
have to go to the Pootle website and open issues there. From time to
time we will update our installation of Pootle and thus get the new
features/bugfixes.

Of course, it is still useful and good if, after posting to the Pootle
website, you send a link here so that we can follow the issue.

Regards,
   Andrea.

The Pootle website is http://pootle.translatehouse.org/

The issue queue is here:
https://github.com/translate/pootle/issues

The latter is the place where one can report Pootle bugs or suggest
enhancements. You will need a (free) Github account for that.

   Andrea.

The Pootle documentation
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/stable-2.7.2/features/machine_translation.html
states this is a paid service, with fees listed at
https://cloud.google.com/translate/pricing

The fact that it is a paid service complicates things a lot. Not much
for the amount (it's 20$ per million characters; still, it would be a
large amount if you consider all strings and all languages), but for the
paperwork needed for the ASF to an expenditure "per use" of this kind.

I mean: for a free service we would only have the technical issue, for a
paid service this becomes very complex to handle.

Regards,
   Andrea.

RE: ENCOUNTERED A UNWORKING BUTTON - IMPORTANT

Hi Andrea and all,

Since the Google translate is a paid service, then I really do not see a point in the button being displayed on the webpage, and perhaps it is a good idea to remove it for those reasons. If there’s no use of a feature, then there’s no purpose for its existence.

Regards

OK thanks. It's displayed since Pootle by default displays it, but I'll
look if it can be removed from the user interface so that translators
are not confused.

Regards,
   Andrea.
