Bugzilla vs Pootle [Fwd: [Issue 104380] [zh-CN] Translation error in Y Axis dialog - Positioning - Place labels]

Arrigo Marchiori
Dear QA list, dear L10N list,

while lurking on the issues@ mailing list I received a message about
issue #104380.  A user reported a problem with the Chinese
translation and was eventually told to use Pootle rather than
Bugzilla. The relevant parts are below.

I would like to point out that Bugzilla _is_ suggested for reporting
issues with translations on this page:
https://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html

I therefore suggest we should either fix the above page, or change our
way of processing this kind of bug reports.

This is just my humble opinion and I am open to discussion.

Still in my humble opinion, the bug's poster deserves a "thank you"
for having followed the above suggestion.

Please keep me in Cc while replying.

Best regards.

Please submit your translated strings on Pootle system:

Bugzilla is not the right tool to this kind of problem.

fixing this in Pootle is enough IMHO. No need to bother BZ when some has
found that, e.g., the word "their" and "there" was mixed-up.

It has to be fixed in Pootle anyway, so let's stick with this.
Communication has to be - or can be - handled via the @L10n mailing list.

My 2ct.

Marcus

But not everyone has a Pootle account.

We must give every user the chance to report such a bug in Bugzilla. It
is our turn to communicate that to L10N and find a native speaker to
check/fix the reported error.

Czesław Wolański
Hi,

Apologies for stating the obvious (cf. https://bz.apache.org/ooo/describecomponents.cgi):
One of the "Product" category is _Native-Lang_ that
"deals with information and resources in a person's native tongue. Translation errors go here."

Thus saying that "Bugzilla is not the right tool to this kind of problem." (Bugzilla Issue 104380)
is hardly in line with specs.

Consider 3 actual comments on Bugzilla reports dealing with wrong/inadequate translation:

(1)
>Thanks for your input.
>Translations for AOO are done in Pootle (...)
>You can always make suggestions there.
>
>If you have time to help, you can ask for a Pootle account (...)
>
>That will give you much more possibilities.

(2)
>Regarding translations:
>
>Feel free to subscribe to our localization mailing list (...)

(3)
>These translation issues should really be discussed on the localization mailing list.
>
>Please consider to subscribe to the l10n mailing list (...)

IMO we shall thank the OP and may encourage anyone to:
- make suggestion in Pootle
- consider getting Pootle account
- subscribe to localization mailing list

Thus +1 for Matthias' opinion.

Regards,
Czesław Wolański

... and not a BZ account. ;-)
But both can be created easily on demand.

We *can* communicate if needed. But often IMHO it's not really
necessary. So, the most important part is: fixing the problem in Pootle.
