General help issue

Carloss Massage
To whom it may concern
I have been using open office for a very long time, never had issues.
Yesterday (18-12-19) I was using my document I used daily,  then we had a power cut, so the Computer went off. (this has happened before but never encountered the following issue)
Once the computer came back on I went to access my document, to get a pop up, “locked by unknown user”
read only or open copy
neither of the above open my document, it is an important document.

I closed everything off, ran troubleshooting, still not allowed me in the document, I transferred it to another computer and still wont let me access it.
A few of my other open office document still open apart from the 2 used on 18-12-19.

I have tried searching for a phone number for direct help, but only option was forums, I have tried following whats said in forums, but still unsuccessful.

I restored my computer back to a restore point, thinking something in-between may have happened, I also installed the latest version of AOO, but again not allowing me to open 2 important documents….

PLEASE advise
Kind regards

When you can't open the document or it won't let you access it, what
exactly happens? Is there an error message? Does it open but appear
empty? What is the file size according to the file listing (in File
Explorer under Windows).

Do you have timed backups enabled?

Re: General help issue

W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
The length of 18.6 kB suggests that there's something in the file, but
for some reason OpenOffice isn't recognizing it as an OpenOffice file.

What exactly is the name of the file that you're double-clicking on?
(If you're using Windows, first make sure in File Explorer, under the
View tab, that the 'File name extensions' box is checked.)

Again, do you have timed backups enabled? (Under Tools > Options >
Load/Save > General, the 'Save AutoRecovery information ...' option.)

Please reply to All so the other people on this e-mail list see your
replies.

I don't know why OpenOffice isn't recognizing the file contents
properly. Maybe someone else will have ideas.

Do you have 'Always create a backup copy' enabled?

Again, please use 'Reply to All' (including

If you have 'Always create a backup copy' enabled, you could try
looking for a raffle.bak file in the backup directory. You can find
out where that is by looking at Options > OpenOffice > Paths.

Please please include [hidden email] when you reply.

You should enable "viewing of hidden and archive files" (Google for how to do this if you don't know);  Then use the file manager to go to the folder in which you Saved  your file(s); there delete any filename of form "~.lock.MyFile.ods#"  Depending on the type of original file, the .ods may be .odt

Important: these lock files are small, only a few hundred bytes long.  The files that "own" them will be several KB in size.  Do not delete the wrong file!

Then go to the root of the OpenOffice User Profile (details in Tutorial at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426) and under the folder 4, beside a folder called "user", you may find another .lock file, this time cunningly called ".lock"; delete this.

OO should now open your troublesome files.

If when (if) your files open you are prompted to select an ASCII filter,  your files are damaged beyond repair - waste no time with them; you have a more serious situation and should as soon as possible use the methods in the Tutorial at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=85038#p395910
to attempt to recover temporary or deleted copies of your files.

rory as explained previously i had followed the forums.
i had located a “lock” file of it and removed it

when i hover over the document im having trouble with
it is not showing “title” “author” or “modified” like my other files.
it just shows “type” “size”

i was only on the document yesterday

Check for lock files _both_ in the Save folder and in the root of the OpenOffice User profile.

Help on the User list and on the Forums is provided by volunteers on a pro bono basis, in their own time, so there is no telephone help line.

If removal of the lock files doesn't help, use the methods outlined in the last tutorial I indicated.

Yes, Options > OpenOffice > Paths is in OpenOffice, under Tools.

The path may be something like
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\backup

Check for lock files _both_ in the Save folder and in the root of the OpenOffice User profile.

Help on the User list and on the Forums is provided by volunteers on a pro bono basis, in their own time, so there is no telephone help line.

If removal of the lock files doesn't help, use the methods outlined in the last tutorial I indicated.

The screenshot indicates that the file is empty of content.
Use the recovery methods in the second tutorial to which I directed you.  The sooner this is done the better the chance of success- continued use of the computer may overwrite temporary files and prevent their recovery.

There may still be no usable content in the file.
Here is the link to the tutorial:

Use the methods in the Tutorial at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=85038#p395910
to attempt to recover temporary or deleted copies of your files.

hi again
after my last email

instead of opening the file directly feom my folders, ive opened office calc
and clicked to open the file that way

the dialog box “ascii filter options” has appeared.

in the previous email you said dont waste time on this..... and follow the steps in the link......

ive tried and done those steps, but i still cant seem to be finding it.

what could i possibly be doing wrong?
ive used openoffice for about 7years and never encountered this.

is there anyone who can help or guide me through it a different way please??

If you have tried the steps in the Tutorial and PhotoRec or Recuva (one is as good as the other) don't find anything, then your file is lost.

As I said before, help is provided on a pro bono basis by volunteers.  There are no other recovery methods.

There are many other components in an OpenOffice file - style, metadata and setting information - which bulk up the archive.  Rename the file to type .zip, open it with an archive manager and examine content.xml with a plain text editor.  That component will contain the data of the file.

It can happen that if a computer is powered down too quickly, or a laptop lid closed, before the OpenOffice housekeeping data has been written to the disk platters, the file can be corrupted.

When one double-clicks on the .zip file the system archive manager tries to open it.  If it says "can't open", then that's that.

I haven't used Windows for ten years, so may be wrong, the pain text editor used be Notepad.

Re: General help issue

Carloss Massage
ive tried opening with notepad
that just appears blank.

ive just saved a total blank new document. this saves with size 7.3kb

another document that i have info on that opens, is 12.7kb

so surely they must be some information as the said document is still showing 18.7kb.
i must not be doing something right with it
