I think that the social list is basically inactive, I am signed up, and
this is the first posting I have seen on the social list in many months.

I know... we could argue about the  English language. That would be a good
way to *socialize*, don't you think? ;)

BTW, nice to hear from you again, Ian.

And you Rod.

Just for those still on the list. I think it's quiet because the OOo
marketing list has much less traffic than it had a couple of years back
(A lot of it off topic) so this list was set up for general chat. While
I can understand that off topic stuff on the main list can be considered
a distraction, there is more to generating a community than logic and
systems. I'm as busy as most, possibly busier but all work and no play
makes jack a dull boy :-). It would be nice to see this list a bit more
busy.

So what can we say to start a flame war? Spelling seems a bit too soft a
topic :-).

Hello
I have been receiving your emails for the past couple postings; I am not sure what the "social" list is about. But, since my email has been getting your e-mailings might be why you have not gotten any response from it.

Hi Fred, this list is to keep OOo community members out of trouble on
the main lists :-) If a discussion develops that gets a bit tiresome and
off topic on say the discuss list someone can say "take it to social" so
the rest of the list can get on with the serious stuff. We have had
discussions here from gun law in the USA to the history of the Catholic
Church :-) Really its like a cafe/bar where people can chat and
socialise.

Sort of depends on your interests.

 [hidden email]

Is not too high in traffic and discusses ways of getting OOo out to more
people. Also you can report there any successes you have had big or
small so we can say well done :-) Also to give other people ideas of
things that are successful. Joining the marketing project is an easy way
to contribute especially if you are not too technical.

[hidden email]

Discusses issues and problems. If you find a bug you might check in
issuezilla on the main web site to see if it is already logged then
describe it on te discuss list to see if anyone else has come across it.
Might discuss enhancements or things that need improving or ask how to
do something. The users list is really the place for simple things and
Discuss for more complex issues.

Hope that helps :-)

When the UK government ran the national census a lot of people put their
religion down as Jedi Knight to see how many would have to do it to get
it accepted alongside other religions. Since a religion is a belief
system if enough people sincerely believe something by definition it's a
religion. Of course it would be easy to say that most of the Jedi were
not sincere therefore it shouldn't be counted but proving sincerity is a
bit of a problem.

Maybe we should get the same people to put OpenOffice.org or Open Source
in as their religion. Probably more credible in some cases ;-)

I am a "retired" IT professional with time on my hands.
After two strokes, I am no longer able to do the type
of programming needed in OOo.  I use to write mainframe
programs and programming editors/formatters for those
languages used.  Like Crimson Editor, but with format
checking and common error checking. I now "work" mostly with
non-profit oragnizations with setup/security and web pages.
I have made it my business to get people/businesses
to use OOo and other opensource or free stuff for
their windows computers.  I even burned several
copies of the ISO downloads and "handed" them out
to businesses/people in my local area to try.

I try to help in the users@ list, but I am not as good as
the others.  I just relate how I fixed my problems that others
not have.  I have used Writer mostly since the early 1.x days.
I am starting to use the other parts (Calc, Impress) more
lately.

As I said, I have time on my hands.
I would like to do what I can.

Hey, Ian, Good to hear from you!!

Let's not forget the discussion of "English" (US?) system vs. Metric (or
whatever it's called now) system!

And the rather more heated debate on whether the U.S. citizens had any
justification at all for appropriating "Americans" for themselves! IIRC,
I favored changing it to "USians". ;-)

It's good to see so many of the old crowd is still monitoring the list.
I haven't been very active on "discuss", or any of the OO.o lists
because of work/home pressures for the past year!

It's good to hear from you all!

Hey, here's a new flame topic:
I think G.W. Bush will go down in history as one (if not the) most
generally incompetent President in U.S. history.

Let the FLAMES begin! ;-)

how about a gas price . . . .

webmaster@krackedpress.com

In my area of NY, the gas price is $0.20+ higher than
the national average.

I remember when gas went from $.95 to $1.02
and I was upset then, now $4+ for the low grade
gas and $4.50+ for diesel.

Have a rip roaring discussion about that.

There was an article that suggested to make a
new usage tax that would add $0.50 to $1.50
more per gallon.  He stated that if that was done
we would conserve more and then the price
would go back down below what the price was
before the added tax.  At that point the tax would
be reduced.  Then increased as demand goes up.

Stupid, but proposed and people are listening.

I'm paying £1.20 per *litre* and more for diesel in the UK

Here I think most people think G W is a misguided convictionist
politician. He believes he is right, probably sincerely, but he comes
across as being an intellectual light weight who has made some crucially
bad decisions aided and abetted by some particular individual interest
groups.

Mind now, here it's go away Gordon come back Tony :-)

I blame the tool vendors -- Snap-On, Craftsman, etc .Every set of wrenches
or sockets I've ever purchased has some of both system in it, and naturally
they have to charge more that way.

( Seriously, it's inertia combined with insularity and an economy big enough
to have our own way about it.)

Logically you may be right. Ain't never going to happen though. Historical
accident arising from the fact that the name of our country consists of
three common words ("united", "states", and "of") and one proper noun
("America"). If you want to blame anybody, consider the foreign (to us)
press. It's not like folks generally get to choose their own nicknames!

Shrub is a moron. Even members of his own party don't want anything to do
with him this election cycle. The Reps have already lost three House seats
in special elections in districts that were formerly considered safe for
them including the seat occupied by former Speaker Dennis Hastert in
Illinois. It's going to be a well-deserved bloodbath come November and I'm
loving every minute of it!

Interesting how sales of big SUVs are down something like 30% while sales of
small, fuel-efficient vehicles are doing well. Finally.

If we had imposed a serious carbon tax, starting, say, about ten years ago,
of about $0.25 per gallon and increasing by that amount each year, I believe
we would now have a pump price very comparable to what we have now due to
lower demand. We would have a lot fewer gas-guzzlers on the road, cleaner
air, and just possibly a more sane foreign policy.

But that would make too much sense...
