Matthias Seidel
Hi,

You sure have noticed that the pt translation (and some other) are now
updated in trunk and AOO42X.

Happy building! ;-)

Hi Matthias, Mechtilde, all

I did not notice (I am now Watching the PT l10n page at Github to be notified of future updates)

Thank you for the heads up and thank you Mechtilde for creating the updated SDF file.

I will investigate the required steps to build an updated installer for Linux x64

Kind regards,
Pedro

The buildbots should already have the new translations.
And I plan to do new test builds around Tuesday.

What exactly are you thinking of? An installer for AOO on Linux?

I meant building the DEBS. As you know I'm not a developer. I would love to be able to create an OpenOffice snap or even a flatpak for Linux. And a real updater for the Windows version :)

Linux still takes some time to upload but Windows is ready.

I am also not a developer... ;-)

A snap would be perfect! I suggested that long ago but I certainly don't
have the time.
At least I tried and built my first "Hello World" snap at Ubucon Europe
in 2016. ;-)

Just for the record, off the top of my head...

For testing we should just build the so-called "installed" package (you
just unzip the tree and you are done).

I think I saw, ages ago, a graphical installer for Linux, written in
Java; none of our current builds uses that approach (and honestly this
seems a bit out of place in the Linux world) but the code might still be
there. We are surely talking about OpenOffice 3.x if not even 2.x.

And yes, I would also consider a unified Linux version if they didn't
invent a new "unified" way of doing Linux packages every year... But one
of AppImage, Flatpak or Snap should be tried sooner or later, probably
in this order. This is to be discussed separately anyway.

Regards,
   Andrea.

The Installtion of the DEBS is ok. It is only one line for unpacking the
*.tar.gz and then

dpkg -i *.deb

in the unpacked directory with all debs

Hi Mechtilde

Yes, but the idea was to have a single deb or rpm that the user simply opens/launches and installation starts (without any terminal typing ;) ). If such a snap or flatpak is available then OpenOffice would be visible for new Linux users in the Software "store".

Pedro

Re: Updated 4.2.0 build?

Thank you for the heads up!

I'm already running the x64 Linux build from the buildbot, available at
https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/41x/

It is working correctly and the pt translation is indeed updated (and improved ;) ).

Regards,
Pedro

Windows Installer translation

Pedro Lino-3
Hi all

After running the latest AOO 4.2 Windows installer in  Portuguese, compiled by Matthias, we (Pedro Albuquerque and myself) noticed some inconsistencies and typos in the messages.

Would it be possible to have this translation process included in Pootle?

If not, is there another link/site/tool that we can use to fix this?

Kind regards,
Pedro

See:

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127628

I am pretty sure I wrote with you about that longer ago...

What you probably see in the first part of the installation are now
strings from NSIS.
Of course you can try to correct this at the NSIS project. [1]

But normally you should not see them at all, because they are replaced
with the strings from Pootle.

I would rather vote for fixing this old bug! ;-)

I'm well aware of that bug. I commented on it in 2018...
Ideally this should be fixed first but since I'm not a developer, I can only help with what I can do.

There are mistakes/inconsistencies also in the AOO specific texts.

I downloaded the source and yes, there is plenty of translation work there too...

Can we mark that bug as a blocker for 4.2? Does anyone currently working on AOO have the time/skills to fix this?

I am also no developer ;-)

But I tried to look into it and if I could do it it would have been
fixed long ago.

Then fix it in Pootle?

All texts should be there. If not, please point me to the missing parts.

Everyone can ask for release blocker flag in Bugzilla.

But this is no serious bug and we obviously have no developer to fix it.

We are discussing from time to time, that it might be worth to remove the packaging to the exe completely.

To my knowledge in the past we did create an exe because you could not doubleclick msi files.
But Microsoft had fixed this for quite some time and there is no real reason to keep the exe packaging.

So any objections?

No objections at all on my side, provided we continue to offer the same
user experience to Windows users who start the installation.

As discussed at FOSDEM, this has the additional advantage that, if one
wants to sign binaries and installation files, there is one less file to
sign.

Of course, as usual someone has to do the work and time is scarce...
