OpenOffice.org 3.3 - PLS approve and request language versions

Rafaella Braconi-2
This is a call for action for all native-language teams!

Yesterday, during the OOo release meeting, the RC10 candidate has been
approved to be the OOo 3.3 final release.

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/ReleaseStatus_Minutes#2011-01-25

This means that all native-language teams can now start approving the language builds vs. language packs in QA track
and request their distribution over the OOo mirror network by filing an issue.

Please note that as QAtrack.services.openoffice.org seems to be down, you can alternatively use http://qatrack.ooodev.org/

DEADLINE for QA approval and Distribution request is February 10th, 2011. If you cannot meet this deadline please let me know.

Thanks,
Rafaella

Hi Rafaella,

someone should adjust the deadline in TCM. At least a few hours ago the
deadline there was set on January 31st.

I am unable to find the TCM for RC10. Are we re-using the 3.3RC on TCM?
Sorry if I missed the discussion on the TC naming.

Dear All,

this is a reminder that February 10th is the deadline to approve the
OpenOffice 3.3 RC10 builds vs language packs and request distribution
over the mirror network.
Please do let me know if you cannot meet this deadline.

In the meanwhile .... thank you to all the Community members who have
already done this!

I haven't been able to test the Norwegian RC's at all. The TCM tests seems
to be unavailable at this point, any suggestions?

Hi Olav,

the TCM test cases are available. However, as this is a RC10 Build which
is based on stable binaries - same as the en-US released ones -, my
recommandation is - depending on the time you can send on approving the
builds:

Option 1) in case you have very, very little time:
- go ahead and approve the builds in qatrack and submit the distribution
request (via issue) if you see that the builds/language packs can be
installed

Opetion 2) if you have more time to dedicate to it:
- run the Release Test Scenario
- approve the builds in qatracktool
- submit the issue to have the builds/language packs distributed
(example: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=116768)

Let me know if you need any help with this.

Hi,

do you want to have these builds on the mirrors as released builds? If
so, please write an issue. You can take 116783 as an example.

Thank you

Marcus

Dear All,

this is a reminder that the deadline to test and request via issue the distribution of the builds/language patch is approaching.

Really thanks to all the teams who already have done this!

Yesterday, during the release meeting, we discussed what will it happen after February 10th. My proposal was to have all remaining RC10 builds and language packs be tested automatically to check if they get installed and then to have them distributed over the mirror network. The advantage of this procedure would be that all users coming to the download page would not be *confused about* definitions such as unstable, at your risk, not tested, etc....  Yes, in the ideal situation it would be really great to see all team perform the testing and approve the RCs, but it's not always possible for everybody.

The proposal has been accepted:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/ReleaseStatus_Minutes#2011-02-07

This means that on February 11th, we will proceed with the distribution of automatically approved build/language packs. However, if you DO NOT want your language to be released this way, please let me know by February 10th.

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

Reading yesterday's minutes I had understood that you would post a
"proposal" to these list, not a "decision". I mean, I had the impression
that this was still under discussion.

Please don't. This could very easily be mistaken for a way to tell the
community that they are not needed, while the truth is that a lot of N-L
projects have already approved their builds explicitly, and as shown by
yesterday's figures there are as many approved builds for OOo 3.2.1 in
its entire lifespan as for OOo 3.3.0 in less than two weeks. So I don't
see a need for this.

OK, then I'll promptly use this veto power! Actually, this will be
enough for me and it could be enough for other N-L teams too; after all,
it's important that N-L teams have a say and less important whether the
default behaviour is to release or not to release.

Please do not distribute any Italian builds or language packs other than
the ones mentioned in
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=116604

Hi Andrea,

really thank you for your feedback, please see my comments below:

OK. But please note that I am saying that any team who is not in favor
of the *automatic distribution* can explicitly say that they don't want
and we will definitively respect this.

The Community is needed! This is not at all the impression I wanted to
give.....

Ok. I understand your concerns. For Italian and the other languages that
have properly released the versions, the situation is different. Are you
suggesting to exclude all these languages from the *automatic* distribution?
I am thinking about the users who go to the download page, see a 3.2.1
release version and a RC10 for 3.3. The RC10 3.3 would install, why not
giving them the 3.3? In other cases teams translate but do not proceed
with the distribution request so that the RC10 remain always RC asnd
many users would not even download a RC because that's too confusing .....

How would you proceed about this?

I can understand your concern but this is absolutely not the way we want
to go and how this step should be seen. Of course we need final tests
for the RC build. As we (Oracle) do not have engineers with an
understanding for all these supported languages, we need your support
for this. This is really highly appreciated.

Please have a look on "http://download.openoffice.org/all_rc.html".
Every gap in the install and langpack tables means the build is released
and no longer in RC status. But IMHO there are to less gaps. Furthermore
there are languages which have no gaps, means they have no release at all.

These NL teams have no chance to release the builds as they have not the
manpower, hardware for the final release tests or other reasons. Maybe
they have a well localized build but how to get these builds to the users?

Here we want to step in with a smaller test amount to help to release
these languages, too. AFAIK we haven't seen any bigger issues which are
language dependent, so IMHO we can assume that a more simple test is
sufficiant for the remaining languages. So, an automated testing is what
we are offering.

Especially for less used platforms like Solaris Sparc/x86, Linux 64-bit,
MacOS Intel (regarding the tables) this could be very helpful.

But maybe you have another idea how to help here? :-)

Best regards

Marcus

yes. If there are many problems on some specific packages - and users
may notice there are problems, then fix them by themselves.

> So, an automated testing is what we are offering.
yes.

Automated test is quite good for every language. My PPC builds
are usually left as RCs. In my impression, less than 10 percent of my builds are approved.

In any case, the NL lead should would take an action. If some NL leads
approves automatic release for every RCs, it's okay. Others can offer
ingredients; some results for automatic tests. NL leads judge the results,
and approve if they think it's okay.

thanks,

Thanks, this (and the recent corresponding announce) addresses my case;
other communities might have different preferences than the Italian one,
or they will speak up in case they see something wrong with the new
policy.
